Fed up with all the unethical “Patient Management” programs that dominate our profession?

If you’re like me, you’ve seen all those coaches out there promising a short cut to success – the magic script or process to bringing in an “avalanche” of patients. You’re also aware of how they cater to the worst kinds of practitioner too. You know the kind I mean – cookie cutter plans, high pressure sales techniques, ridiculously drawn out treatment plans… all that rubbish.

And if you’re like me, you’ve probably had experienced like this: finding a program that says all the right things, taking the plunge (with a hefty up-front price tag)… and then realising it’s just another bag of sleazy sales tricks and psychological tactics to convince patients that they need you. Even worse, all the talk about being “congruent with your values” really just meant accepting their values and practice model as better than yours. And not only do these techniques cause actual harm to patients (and our reputation!), they also promote one of the most enduring myths in healthcare:

“You can either earn well or sleep well”

The idea that you have to choose between financial success and being a decent person is rife within the profession. It’s also quite disheartening to think that the worst kinds of practitioners are the only ones making a good living. You’re left with the choice of picking your way through that ethical minefield, looking for the least worst parts of their approaches (many of which are completely outdated anyway)… or to give up on the idea entirely, resigning yourself to a career of “quiet desperation”.

The result of this is decent, honest and hard working professionals and up stressed, demotivated, and skirting burnout. Believe me, I know what that’s like – my first few years in practice had me heading right there.

But here’s the thing – it doesn’t have to be this way!

It turns out, there is a wealth of research out there on effective, ethical communication. It’s just that most of this knowledge sits outside of the profession. These techniques have been tested for years in the real world, with thousands of patients.  I’ve studied these various approaches and worked out how to apply them “in the trenches”.

This has resulted in the development of specific strategies and protocols, within the framework of “Value Based Care”. This patient centred paradigm allows practitioners to create strong therapeutic relationships in a totally ethical manner. This is what I teach.

Hi, I’m Chris…

As a second-gen chiropractor, I grew up in a chiropractic family. I’m super-fortunate to have been exposed to it from such a young age – and even spent most of my teenage years working part-time on the desk in my parents practice. In fact, it was this experience that taught me how important communication was to the patients recovery – even from reception staff like myself! There was never a moment’s doubt -this was what I wanted to do with my life. As soon as I finished school I enrolled in chiropractic college, and couldn’t wait to graduate and start making a difference myself.

But whilst I enjoyed my first couple of years, one thing kept bugging me – the only people offering any kind of training in communication were exactly the charlatans I knew to avoid. And whilst my family taught me a lot about how to deliver a Report of Findings, it’s fair to say that it wasn’t exactly a “modern” approach. With practice I got really good at it… but it never felt totally comfortable to me. I’d find myself going into every RoF with a small knot in my stomach, hoping the patient wouldn’t think I was “selling” to them.

But the truth was.. I was selling!

My treatment plan might have been reasonable, and my intentions pure… but essentially it was an “altruistic sales pitch” to convince them to want what I wanted for them. In fact, I’ll never forget the time a patient called me on it – about 2 minutes in, when I was telling him about the difference between symptomatic and functional recovery, he cut me off:

“Look, I don’t care about any of that right now – just get me out of pain and then we’ll see about whether I’ll come back”

That’s when it hit me – I needed to try something different. Over the next few years, I started learning everything I could. It wasn’t always smooth sailing (like the time I invested in a $5k “patient-centred” program, only to find the coach didn’t even enjoy seeing patients and quit after 5 years in practice…), but I knew there had to be more.

And as it turns out, there was! I realised that there is a wealth of knowledge out there on effective, ethical communication. It’s just that most of this knowledge sits outside of chiropractic! Disciplines such as cognitive neuroscience, relational therapy and person-centred psychotherapy have been developing techniques for building rapid and lasting rapport, and discovering the underlying values that drive each individual. These techniques have been tested for decades in the real world, with millions of people.

I studied these various approaches, experimenting with them and worked out how to apply them “in the trenches” as a chiropractor. The result? A set of specific strategies and protocols, delivered within the framework of “Value Based Care”. It’s a patient centred paradigm that allowed me to create strong therapeutic relationships in a totally ethical manner, and deliver great results to patients on their terms.

Seeing these results for myself, and then with my team, I knew I had to share this with others facing similar struggles. I began to teach them to others – both with the Royal College of Chiropractors Specialist Pain Faculty and independent seminars throughout the UK and Europe

Since then, I’ve spoken internationally on communication skills and patient-centred care. I’m currently the Lead Tutor for the Royal College’s South East Thames Faculty, a guest lecturer at London South Bank University, and recently collaborated with the Royal College in the development of their new Communication Practice Standards. I was the winner of the British Chiropractic Associations “Chiropractors Chiropractor” Excellence Award in 2022.

In 2017 I launched Patient Centred Training to provide more educational opportunities for colleagues. Since then I’ve gone on to train hundreds of clinicians to effectively connect and build trust with their patients, both in person and online. I’ve made it my mission to share these results with our profession, so no practitioner ever feels like they have to choose between a good living and sleeping well at night again.
